The Institute of Experimental Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences

The Centre of Plant Structural and Functional Genomics is one of the organizational units of the Institute of Experimental Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The Institute of was founded in 1962. Today, it has 14 laboratories located in Prague and Olomouc. The institute conducts fundamental research in plant genetics, physiology, phytopathology and biotechnology. The research in plant genetics focuses on plant genome organization, evolution and function. Physiological investigations include hormonal and ecological control of plant growth and development, mechanisms of transport and action of growth regulators, physiology of plant viruses, and plant pathophysiology. In biotechnology, the institute investigates the design and preparation of edible vaccines from plants and mechanisms of phytoremediation. However, the Institute is also active in applied research is running a very successful program on breeding of apple trees resistant to fungal diseases.
